About the Bulgarian vignette
The Bulgarian vignette is a time-based road charge for motor vehicles with a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes. It is required not only on motorways: the paid network also covers practically all first-, second- and third-class national (republican) roads outside towns and villages.
Since 1 January 2019 the vignette has been fully electronic: there is no windscreen sticker, and the e-vignette is recorded against the vehicle's license plate and country of registration. It is issued by the Road Infrastructure Agency (API) through its National Toll Administration, known as BG Toll.
Here you can order a weekly (7 days), monthly (30 days), quarterly (3 months) or annual (1 year) e-vignette that starts on the date you choose. Cameras and mobile toll-control units check plates around the clock, and driving on the paid network without a valid vignette is fined.
Validity of the Bulgarian e-vignette
Every vignette starts on the start date you choose and runs until 23:59 on its last day. The last day is shown in the order summary before you pay.
- Allows unlimited journeys on the whole paid road network during the validity period — there is no per-kilometre charge for vehicles up to 3.5 t.
- If you choose today as the start date, the vignette becomes valid shortly after your order has been processed — never retroactively.
- Each vignette is tied to one license plate and country of registration and cannot be moved to another vehicle.
Which vehicles need a vignette in Bulgaria?
The e-vignette is mandatory for motor vehicles with at least four wheels and a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes. One category covers all of them:
Motorcycles and other vehicles with fewer than four wheels do not need a vignette. If you tow a trailer or caravan and the combined maximum permissible mass of vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes, the trailer needs an additional vignette of its own — the vignette ordered here covers the towing vehicle only.

Frequently asked questions
What exactly is the Bulgarian e-vignette?
The Bulgarian e-vignette is an electronic record that the vignette fee has been paid for a particular vehicle and period. It replaced the windscreen sticker on 1 January 2019: your right to use the paid road network is stored in the national toll system against your license plate, so nothing has to be displayed in the car.
Is it compulsory, and on which roads?
Yes — motor vehicles with at least four wheels and a maximum permissible mass of up to 3.5 tonnes need a valid vignette before they use the paid road network. Unlike in many countries, that network is not limited to motorways: it also covers practically all first-, second- and third-class national roads outside towns and villages. Road sections inside the signposted boundaries of built-up areas are exempt.
How does the digital registration work?
After payment you receive an order confirmation by e-mail within minutes. We then register your license plate, country of registration and chosen period in the Bulgarian toll system: standard processing takes up to 12 hours, Express processing from 1 minute to 2 hours. Once the vignette is registered we send you the vignette confirmation by e-mail. There is nothing to print or display — cameras and officers check the plate.
How long does a vignette stay valid?
You choose the period and the start date. The 7-day vignette covers the start date and the following 6 days, the 30-day vignette the start date and the following 29 days. The 3-month vignette runs until the day before the same date three months later, and the 1-year vignette until the day before the same date next year. Each one ends at 23:59 on its last day.
Which vehicles need one?
Cars, vans, off-road vehicles and other motor vehicles with at least four wheels up to 3.5 tonnes, as well as motorhomes registered as category M1. Motorcycles are exempt. A trailer or caravan needs an additional vignette only if the combined maximum permissible mass of the towing vehicle and the trailer exceeds 3.5 tonnes. Vehicles over 3.5 tonnes pay a distance-based toll instead of a vignette.
What if I drive without a valid vignette?
The paid network is monitored around the clock by fixed cameras and mobile toll-control units that read license plates; the police and, at border crossings, customs officers check as well. The fine for a car without a valid vignette is €153.39. Instead of the fine, a compensatory fee of €46.50 can be paid within 14 days. A vignette issued for a wrongly entered plate counts as no vignette, so check your data carefully.
Can I change my order or get a refund?
Order data can be corrected only before the vignette's validity starts — write to support@vignetteexpress.com as soon as you notice a mistake. Refunds are possible only before the vignette has been registered in the toll system, or if an order failed due to a technical fault on our side — once registered and active, a vignette cannot be cancelled or refunded, in line with the Bulgarian toll rules. EU consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal for our service fee until the service has been fully performed; approved refunds are returned to your original payment method within 14 days.
Can I move a vignette to a different car?
No — a vignette is tied to the license plate and country of registration it was issued for and cannot be transferred to another vehicle. If you change vehicles, you need a new vignette for the other one.
